The Indian Muslim Community Steering Committee recently held a meeting to discuss various initiatives and focus areas to strengthen the Indian Muslim community in Singapore. As an attendee of the meeting, I was able to witness first-hand the dedication and commitment of the committee towards this goal. The meeting highlighted four focus areas that the committee is currently working on: religious leadership, religious education, under-served segments, and heritage & identity.
They emphasized the need to empower women through home-based initiatives, such as providing equipment like microwaves and organizing school holiday programs. Additionally, the committee proposed the formation of a taskforce to groom potential future leaders for the Indian Muslim community and create a base level of competencies. These initiatives reflect the committee’s efforts to create a more cohesive society and strengthen the Indian Muslim community in Singapore.
The committee also discussed the need to have policies on foreign imams and develop local IM imams. They identified the importance of creating a database and educating foreign imams about the Singapore Muslim identity. Furthermore, they emphasized the need to continue the Madrasah program and integrate the Indian Muslim community into the mosque Madrasah system. The committee also proposed creating referral centers to support zakat social development and lead the mosque recruitment of more Tamil-speaking staff and Befrienders. These initiatives demonstrate the committee’s dedication to creating a more inclusive society that supports all members of the Indian Muslim community in Singapore.
In conclusion, the MUIS Indian Muslim Community Steering Committee meeting highlighted various initiatives and focus areas that aim to strengthen the Indian Muslim community in Singapore. These initiatives demonstrate the committee’s dedication and commitment to creating a more inclusive and cohesive society. As an attendee of the meeting, I am encouraged by the efforts being made and believe that they will contribute to the betterment of the Indian Muslim community in Singapore.
