Mr. Hairmann Hayak, Managing Director of GivingFridays Pte Ltd, attended the International Conference on Communities of Success (ICCOS) on September 9-10, 2022. The event was organised by Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS), to share and discuss positive narratives and characteristics of successful Muslim communities and their contributions to their wider society, including examples from Islamic history and contemporary societies.

Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS), also known as the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, was established as a statutory body in 1968, when the Administration of Muslim Law Act (AMLA) came into effect. Under AMLA, MUIS’s main role is to advise the President of Singapore on all matters relating to Islam in Singapore and to manage all aspects of religious life of the Singapore Muslim Community.

Its aim is to establish a Muslim community of excellence that is religiously profound and socially progressive, and that thrives in a multi-religious society, secular state and globalised world. Its priority is to Set the Islamic Agenda, Shape Religious Life and Forge a Singapore Muslim Identity, is progressive, inclusive, adaptive and contributive. It champions forward-looking discourse in Islam and promotes interfaith understanding through community engagement initiatives to enhance the social cohesion and well-being of the nation.

​​The International Conference on Communities of Success (ICCOS) is part of the Communities of Success initiative by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis). ICCOS aims to provide a platform for Muslim minority communities around the world to galvanise around a strong narrative of success founded on the notion of “Contributing Citizens, Dynamic Institutions”.

The Conference was held from Friday, 9 September to Saturday, 10 September 2022 at the Raffles City Convention Centre (80 Bras Basah Rd, Singapore 189560). During the event, it was discussed how contextualised religious guidance and progressive religious leadership can empower Muslims to live as dignified and contributing citizens, as well as the important roles that various institutions can play to develop Muslim communities of success.

The 2-day programme featured speeches and panel discussions by renowned religious scholars and leaders, state officials and community leaders from different parts of the world on the 3Cs of successful Muslim communities – Character, Competency and Citizenry. The speeches were made in English and Arabic with simultaneous interpretation.

ICCOS seeks to convene religious leaders and scholars, state officials and community leaders from Singapore and abroad.

GivingFridays, as an automated scheduling tool for donations sent to mosques and other non-profit Muslim organisations in South East Asia, strives to be an active part of such conferences that are particularly aimed at achieving the following objectives.

Examining the role of institutional reforms in the fields of education and social development that are inspired by religious values and principles, in order to aid the development of resilient and cohesive communities in plural societies.

Enhancing Social Cohesion and Active Citizenry:

Examining meaningful collaborative efforts between government agencies, the private sector, and Muslim communities in building robust and resilient institutions that contribute to the strengthening of social cohesion and active citizenry in plural societies and a globalized world.
